Editorial: Android's most wanted -- New phones with a current OS
Step into my time machine, and go back to May 20, 2010, with me. That was the day Google released Froyo to the world with much fanfare and cheering. I think a few little old ladies may have even cried. In any case, we all were excited and looking forward to the day we could have some frozen yogurt for our Android phones. Now back to today, and things still look about the same -- a year and a few days later and manufacturers are still shipping phones with Froyo, even though Gingerbread has been available since December of last year. We're not talking about phones that languished forever and a day without getting an update, that's just as ridiculous, but best saved for another day. This is about new phones, still being shipped and sold with a year old codebase -- and known security issues. Hit the break and read along.

Battlefield 3 To Be EA Games? Biggest Launch
EA Games is really banking on their much anticipated war shooter, Battlefield 3, to make a dent on competitor Call of Duty’s following. The game is slated to demo at E3 2011 in June and be released this coming fall. Continue after the cut for a 12-minute game play preview.
The story of the game is set in 2014 with a conflict starting in Sarajevo and then to the borders of Iraq and beyond. Missions in the game can be played out either in single player mode or in multiplayer mode up to 64 players on PCs, and up to 24 players on consoles.
Battlefield 3 is built on EA’s brand-new game engine called Frostbite 2 developed by their in-house DICE team, bringing incredible realism to the graphics and game play.
“We know we had a big competitor, but head-to-head with Call of Duty in Q3, we have the superior game engine, superior development studio and a flat out superior game,” says EA president Frank Gibeau. “Come and see for yourself. We’ll be showing brand new code and features at E3, I encourage everyone to make time for Battlefield 3.”
Gibeau also revealed during an investment phone call that Battlefield 3 will be getting the biggest launch for any franchise in EA’s history. Although no figures on their campaign budget have been revealed, they have said that they’re dedicating an “enormous commitment of resources” to promote this game.

POLYRO humanoid robot can be built by you, looks more like K-9 than C-3PO
It may bear closer resemblance to an upright dog than a human (check out those ears!), but POLYRO here is the least frightening example of a do-it-yourself robot that we've seen to date. We're not sold on the humanoid's name as an acronym (oPen sOurce friendLY RObot), and the instructions and assembly photos are rather hit or miss, but this rollin' rover definitely scores some points for looks. Prepare to get down and dirty with a jigsaw, drill press, and "safety equipment," before the latest addition to your family is ready to roll across the living room floor on its iRobot base. Instructables has posted a full shopping list, including a 10.1-inch netbook, ROS (Robot OS), and a Kinect. MIT Media Lab develops glasses-free HR3D, supports broad viewing angles (video)
We've already seen plenty of glasses-free 3D HDTVs and portable devices, but a promising new technology called HR3D (High-Rank 3D) has hit the prototype phase. Engineers from MIT's Media Lab, who developed the new solution, say that it avoids compromising on screen brightness, resolution, viewing angle, and battery life, and doesn't require those pesky (and pricey) 3D glasses. HR3D uses a pair of layered LCDs to give the illusion of depth, with the top layer (or mask) displaying a variable pattern based on the image below it, so each eye sees a slightly different picture. Nintendo's 3DS uses a similar technique, but with a parallax barrier instead of a second display. The designers constructed the prototype from two Viewsonic VX2265wm displays, removing the LCDs from their housings and pulling off polarizing filters and films. We've yet to go eyes-on with HR3D, so we're a mite skeptical, but tech this promising is worth watching closely, and from every angle.

HBO GO allows an HBO subscriber to stream over 1400 programs on a computer with a Flash-enabled browser, but just last week, a few days ahead of the scheduled May 2nd release, HBO released the HBO GO iOS app. This free universal app is pretty amazing.
If you are an HBO subscriber and your provider is among the favored ones (AT&T U-verse, Xfinity, DIRECTV, DISH Network, Suddenlink, Verizon FIOS or some flavors of Comcast), you now have the ability to stream a world of HBO content to your iPad, iPhone (3GS or iPhone 4) or iPod Touch (4th generation) away from your home, as long as a WiFi or 3G connection is available.
Given the size of the iPad screen and the design of the app, the experience of navigation and viewing is far more enjoyable on an iPad than other iOS devices when using HBO GO. On the iPad, the app works in both landscape and portrait mode, but on anything else navigation can only be done in portrait mode, while programming plays in landscape mode.

Verizon to put location warning sticker on iPhones
In March, in response to a New York Times article describing how a German mobile phone company tracked one of its customers, Ed Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, and Joe Barton, a Texas Republican, contacted the four major wireless carriers in the U.S. for explanations about how and why mobile location data would be tracked and used. The congressmen, co-Chairmen of the House Bi-Partisan Privacy Caucus, published the four companies' responses on April 28.
Each carrier admitted to storing device location data for some amount of time -- from a few days to several years -- and all offered safeguards and disclosures detailing how personally identifying customer information is secured. However, the carriers could not guarantee the privacy of location data within third party applications, prompting Verizon to suggest its warning label.
Mobile customer privacy concerns exploded into a hot topic about two weeks ago when researchers announced the existence of a file in iOS 4 containing a history of the device's approximate location over time -- which turned out, according to Apple, to merely represent WiFi hotspots and cell towers up to 100 miles from the actual phone location. Although Apple's "locationgate" began after Verizon designed its warning labels, the wireless carrier's letter and forthcoming sticker are a coincidentally timely response to the growing brouhaha about consumer privacy and mobile devices.

Apple Store thieves descend from roof in San Francisco
ifoAppleStore.com is reporting that thieves broke into the Chestnut Street Apple Store in San Francisco last night, apparently entering the store through the roof straight into the inventory area in back of the store, and making off with an undisclosed amount of Apple devices. Unfortunately, I can't find any other reports of the crime online, but since it's apparently a recent happening, we'll have to take the blog's word for it.
They also say that the building in San Francisco is surrounded by other buildings of the same height, so it wouldn't have been too hard for thieves to climb over and drop in on the Apple establishment. The police of course have access to a number of video cameras in the area, so hopefully they'll catch these thieves before long.
Unfortunately, Apple Stores, full of expensive merchandise, have seen their share of crime lately. Earlier this month in San Diego, an attempted smash-and-grab robbery turned into a shooting, and we've heard about lots of other robberies at Apple retail stores as well. Fortunately, security is about as good as any other retail establishment, but you'll always have thieves trying to test the limits.
