Samsung?s WiFi-only Galaxy Tab priced and dated

The Samsung Galaxy Tab P1010 – the WiFi-only version of Samsung’s 7-inch Android 2.2 tablet – has gone up for pre-order at Amazon UK, complete with an estimated ship date of March 31. Priced at 299 ($477), or 100 less than the unlocked 3G-equipped P1000, the new version has the same 1024 x 600 touchscreen, WiFi, single-core 1GHz processor and 16GB of storage.

As for the US market, the last leak suggested Samsung would be offering the P1010 on April 4 with a $399 price tag. There’s no sign of the WiFi-only version on Amazon US as yet, but the timing suggested by the leak and Amazon UK’s schedule do match up. Whether the P1010 is arriving too late to make an impact, especially with Honeycomb models like the XOOM already on sale, will remain to be seen.

Angry Birds Rio coming to the Android Market this week

Rio

When the Amazon Appstore launched, one of the big stories was that it offered an exclusive copy of the new game Angry Birds Rio, the latest installment of the popular Rovio series.

It seems as if that exclusivity is coming to an end this week, as Rovio announced Angry Birds Rio will be coming to the Android Market for free and will be ad-supported. They say as soon as they fix a couple bugs, it will be released. If you're one who cares about ads, the ad-free version is still available over at Amazon.

This is great news for international users who can't access Amazon's Appstore yet. Don't worry, you'll be able to play Angry Birds again soon! [Facebook]

Apple reportedly yet to order iPhone 5 parts

If you're excited to buy the iPhone 5 this summer, you might want to relax a bit. Reports from China are saying that Apple hasn't even started securing the parts for a brand new version of the iPhone, which would mean that there's almost no way a new version could be released this year. Especially with all of the changes described in the recent rumors, Apple would need to start early to get all of the manufacturers working on making enough of a new iPhone to go around, and according to this source in China, those manufacturers haven't heard word one.

When you combine that with what we heard about WWDC lacking a hardware announcement, it's very likely that we won't even hear about a brand new version of the iPhone until this fall. That's fine -- the iPhone 4 is a very solid device, and it's still selling well. If Apple's cloud aspirations are realized this year, the company from Cupertino will have plenty to work on anyway.

Microsoft 234-inch touchscreen not really suitable for Windows Phone [Video]

Ah, Minority Report; whether or not you love the film itself, it’s been incredibly useful as shorthand to instantly encapsulate an eye-catching multitouch environment. Microsoft’s display at CeBIT 2011 earlier this month certainly delivered on that: interactive presentation specialist Stereolize put together a whopping 234-inch touch-sensitive display for the company to use.

Video demo after the cut

According to Stereolize, the “Microsoft Cinema” display is the largest touchscreen in the world. It’s not entirely clear what resolution it’s running at – this is certainly more than the WVGA you’d get on a Windows Phone – nor how many points of multitouch it supports, but for grabbing attention at a busy trade show (and then encouraging people to sit and watch) it’s perfect.

Samsung Galaxy S II with TouchWiz 4.0 gets hands-on walkthrough [Video]

Samsung has been on a roll this past week, with the ultra-slim Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1 tablets finally bringing some serious competition – in specs, design and price – to the iPad 2, and helping the company dominate the news cycle at CTIA 2011. Samsung also brought along the Galaxy S II to the show, and our sibling site Android Community grabbed some hands-on time with the dual-core smartphone.

Video demo after the cut

As we found back in our initial hands-on with the Galaxy S II back at MWC 2011 last month, the 8.49mm smartphone certainly makes a great first-impression, with its huge 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display and pair of 8-megapixel and 2-megapixel cameras. A familiar face walked Android Community through the key features, as you can see in the video below.

There’s also a full demonstration of TouchWiz 4.0, complete with new Live Tile widgets, new gestures and more. The phone itself is expected to drop in Q2 2011, pricing to be confirmed.

QuickCal for Mac: natural language events and todos for iCal

QuickCal has been one of my favorite ways to add items to iCal. It started with a Dashboard widget that let me use natural language to add calendar events. I loved it (actually wrote about it back in '09). Then it became an iOS app, QuickCal Mobile, and I was able to add entries with blazing speed while on-the-go, as well as view all of my upcoming appointments within the app. It currently has a place on my iPhone dock for instant access. Now, QuickCal is a desktop application, available in the Mac App Store, and it has some cool new capabilities.

The natural language engine is pretty smart to begin with. You can type things like "Dr. appt 4p" and an event is created for today at 4:00pm titled "Dr. appt." You can also get more verbose, adding locations and start and end times. It does todo items, too. "todo - Get something done by wed" will add a task to iCal with a due date. That's not working for me in the current version, but I've seen video of it working splendidly in the upcoming 2.3 release.

You set a default calendar to add to, but you can change the target calendar by typing part of the calendar's name in the entry box. It can run menubar only, dock only or both. You can also set it up to launch directly to entry mode and quit after you finish one event or todo. That's perfect if you just want to run it from Quicksilver or LaunchBar and not have it running permanently.

The menubar offers a dropdown showing all of your upcoming appointments and todo items. You can click an entry to open it in iCal, but you don't really need to. You can see everything you need to -- and in the upcoming version you can also check off tasks and see priorities and days until due -- from that little icon up there. Once the new version is approved by Apple, it will actually turn iCal into a much handier todo list than it normally would be.

Smart reminders automatically set alarms based on the distance away an event is, and the duration of the event. If you set a day long event for a month away, you'll get reminders at configurable intervals up to the date. If your new event starts in an hour, you can automatically set just a 15 minute alarm. You can turn this off, but it makes setting reminders a breeze.

Sound good? Grab it fast, it's only US$.99 while the upcoming version is in review with Apple. It could be days, it could be hours ... who knows? But it's cheap right now, and handy for anyone who uses iCal.

Switched On: The PlayBook polyglot

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

When Apple introduced the iPad, it had but a smattering of third-party applications, but the company stressed its own. As Apple iPhone software SVP Scott Forstall stated in the iPad introduction video, "We looked at the device and we decided: let's redesign it all. Let's redesign, reimagine and rebuild every single app from the ground up specifically for the iPad."

Compare this to the strategy employed by RIM, makers of the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. One year after the iPad's debut, Apple's head start in apps has proven an formidable advantage against the onslaught of slates announced by its competitors in the smartphone world. Some have chosen to latch onto Android and attain backwards compatibility with over 200,000 existing smartphone apps. HP, with its TouchPad as flagship, will circle its wagons of PCs, printers and phones around the webOS platform. However, the announcement this week that RIM, too, will support Android apps says much about how the company sees its position in the tablet wars.

Self-strengthening polymer nanocomposite works best under pressure

No one keeps carbon nanotubes down -- especially not these guys. The always popular allotropes have been enlisted by researchers at Rice University to create a composite material that gets stronger under pressure. When combined with polydimethylsiloxane, a rubbery polymer, the tubes form a nanocomposite that exhibits self-strengthening properties also exhibited in bones. During testing, the team found the material increased in stiffness by 12 percent after 3.5 million compressions. Apparently, the crew is stumped on why it reacts this way, but is no less eager to see it working in the real world -- discussion is already underway to use the stuff as artificial cartilage. And here we thought aerogel was cool. Full PR after the break.

Baidu, The Chinese Google, Plans Own Mobile OS

The feud between China and Google just doesn’t end. Not only is China now allegedly blocking Gmail, the country’s leading search engine, Baidu, is planning its own mobile OS. According to Baidu CEO Robin Li, the company plans to develop a lightweight operating system for smartphones and tablets that will have advantages to eventually lure away users from competing services, such as Google.

However, Baidu’s direction for their OS is quite different from Android. Li envisions a lightweight mobile OS that takes just a second to boot up and features only a searchbox on the home screen. That search box would be used to navigate to everything else. Li says that the development of the new system could take three to five years as they want to first create a “wide range of other uses” for its search box before it moves on to tackling a mobile OS.

Baidu currently dominates 70 percent of the China internet search market, with a 26 percent share of the mobile search market. It’s offering may seem too simplistic and slow to launch to possibly compete with Android, but could still thrive in the large Chinese market, where a lower per capita income has a different set of demands for mobile computing.

Original iPads still selling well

The second generation iPad has sold amazingly well for Apple since its launch in early March. The tablet device is difficult to find in retail stores, and Apple's online storefront offers the iPad 2 with a 4-5 week ship time. Also riding this wave of success is the original iPad, whose supply will soon be depleted.

The first generation iPad is available in Apple's clearance website with a $100 price reduction. All models are available at this reduced price, except for the 16 GB Wi-Fi, which is apparently sold out. AT&T is also continuing to sell its supply of first generation iPads and only has the high-end 64 GB Wi-Fi + 3G available in its online storefront. This model is selling for an incredibly low $529.

If you want an original iPad, you'd better act quickly. Presumably, Apple has stopped manufacturing the first generation device and is focusing its resources on the second generation model. Apple is selling the remaining inventory from its last production run, and this stock will not be replaced when it is sold out. Of course, there is an ample supply on eBay or Craigslist, but the secondary market is fraught with dishonest sellers and many models will be used.

EV milestone: Fisker rolls first Karma off the assembly line, aims to deliver 7,000 this year

Patience can bear such wonderful fruit, can't it? The electrified (and electrifying) Karma, which first graced the world with its presence back in 2008, has managed to negotiate the slalom course of funding and logistical issues that faces any new upstart company and can now boast its very first production unit. The Karma 1 above will be making its way out within a month (presumably after every nook, cranny and capacitor has been polished to perfection) and company spokesman Roger Ormisher says the plan is to ramp up very slowly and carefully, reaching "over 7,000 deliveries" by year's end. Considering the rate at which Leafs and Volts have been selling so far, that doesn't actually sound half bad.

Rolex Explorer 2 Watch For 2011

For 2011 Rolex offers a new Explorer 2 to follow up last year's new Explorer. While the Explorer was bumped up to 39mm last year, the Explorer 2 is the Rolex sport watch with a modern size of 42mm in width. That is 2mm larger than the Sumbariner, and it likely wears better than the 43mm wide Submariner Deep Sea.

Apple sues Amazon over 'App Store'

On March 18, Apple filed a complaint against Amazon in California over Amazon's use of "App Store," a trademark owned by Apple. According to Bloomberg, Apple has asked the court to bar Amazon from using the "App Store" name in its Android software development program and upcoming Android application store, titled the Amazon Appstore.

In related trademark bickering, Microsoft filed an objection in court earlier this year in hopes of denying Apple the trademark for "App Store," arguing that the term is generic enough to apply to any digital store that sells applications. Apple quickly struck back, pointing out Microsoft's trademark on the generic term "Windows."

As for Apple's suit against Amazon, the claim stated that "Amazon has unlawfully used the App Store mark to solicit software developers throughout the United States." Apple reportedly tried contacting Amazon three times about the use of its trademark since the beginning of the year, but Amazon has yet to "provide a substantive response."

NZXT?s H2 Case Is The Strong, Silent Type

I'm in the middle of putting together a PC right now, and I just can't believe the amount of stress people seem to put on flashy, brightly-lit components. Seems to me that every dollar you spend on colored LEDs is one less dollar you're spending on performance. I prefer understated components that don't make much noise, surrounded by a case that keeps them cool and quiet. NZXT's H2 looks like a good bet.

iPhone 5 rumors: new antenna, metal case

iPhone 4

Trial production for the iPhone 5 has already started in China, according to speculation from The China Times published on Tuesday. According to the report, Apple's fifth-generation smartphone, expected to launch during the third quarter this year, will feature a metal chassis, more sensitive antennae design, dual-core A5 processor, 5-megapixel still camera, 4-inch, scratch-resistant touch screen, and near-field communication (NFC) technology.

The China Times report reiterates many popular rumors about Apple's next generation iPhone. Despite ditching the current iPhone's glass backing in favor of a metal chassis, The iPhone 5 is expected to maintain many of the design sensibilities of its predecessor while evolving the device's underlying technology. At the center of the fifth-generation iPhone sits Apple's potent, dual-core A5 processor, likely to double the iPhone 5's performance. To address perceived issues with signal attenuation in the iPhone 4, the iPhone 5 includes a re-designed, more sensitive antenna. Apple also reportedly crammed a larger, 4-inch display into the iPhone 5 which stretches closer to the edges of the device's face without changing its overall shape or size.

The China Times report [translation] also claims Apple will include an NFC chip in each iPhone 5. NFC technology would allow users to associate financial data with their devices to enable a rapid, wireless payment solution that could one day replace plastic credit cards. Previous rumors have gone back and forth about Apple's plans to include NFC chips in the iPhone 5. If included, the chips are likely to be provided by Qualcomm, according to Boy Genius Report.

Steve Jobs: ?We Have No Plans To? Kill Off iPod Classic

The iPod Classic is a favorite for those who have a large music library and need to take it with them. An avid iPod Classic fan e-mailed Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs a while back concerned that the company was planning to kill off the device since there were a lack of updates. Jobs replied back to the email via his iPhone stating, ?We have no plans to.? According to MacRumors, the email appeared legitimate and was revealed today.

The largest member, capacity wise, in the current iPod family is the classic and it was introduced back in 2005. Apple has focused its efforts on its more popular siblings the iPod nano and iPod touch. It still sports the click-wheel and design-wise it looks a little dated. The only changes to the 160 GB iPod classic recently are the price and thickness.

There is hope for fans of the iPod classic that a new version could come out soon, as Toshiba has produced a 220 GB hard drive that could fit into the current iPod classic?s form factor. Fans will just have to wait to see if the largest iPod of the family does indeed survive, but for now they can find comfort in the words supposedly from Jobs’ himself.

When you find something, let it be … shared. The new versions feature a share button, so you can easily post, Tweet (twiddly-diddly-deet), or just shout it out loud on Facebook, vKontakte or My Opera.

Now also optimized for tablets
Is it any wonder? Opera for tablets brings smooth browsing to your tablet PC with a brand new interface that is sure to rock you like a hurricane.

What we say

?If you?ve lost that loving feeling for the Web on your phone or tablet, don?t let it bring you down. Just try one of our browsers,? said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. ?The sun always shines on TV, but the Opera browser shines on more than 3000 devices.?

Who are you? The difference between the Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers

The Opera Mini browser uses Opera?s servers to shake, rattle and roll webpages down to a tenth of their original size before sending them to your phone. Because the data transferred is smaller, pages arrive faster than the speed of sound. On a pay-as-you-go plan, the Opera Mini browser dramatically cuts the price you pay, because the data you use is greatly reduced. The Opera Mini browser makes any device Internet savvy.
The Opera Mobile browser gives you the whole of the moon on smartphones and tablets. The strange magic of HTML5? Check. Full, high fidelity web browsing? Check. Sharing the same Opera Presto browser engine found in Opera?s desktop browser, the Opera Mobile browser is the premier option for fast, powerful browsing when on unlimited Internet data plans or Wi-Fi.
Availability

The Opera Mini 6 browser brings the fireworks to J2ME, Android, BlackBerry and Symbian/S60 phones.
The Opera Mobile 11 browser sings hallelujah on the Android, Symbian, Windows 7 desktop (labs release), MeeGo (labs release) and Maemo (labs release) platforms.
