John Carmack: iOS Still Better Than Android For Mobile Game Development

John Carmack, the id Software co-founder who essentially created the modern first-person shooter genre from scratch, has once again said that the iOS platform is the best mobile platform out there when it comes to game development. He said as much last year at QuakeCon, but here we are one year later and iOS is still king. Sorry, Fandroids.

HTC Sensation offers just 1GB of 4GB ROM to users

HTC has confirmed that, while the HTC Sensation has a 4GB ROM, only 1GB of that will be user-accessible. The dual-core smartphone reserves 3GB of the ROM for the Android install and the latest version of HTC Sense.

The news is likely to disappoint long-time Android users, who had hoped that more of the 4GB ROM would be available to install apps from the Android Market. While the OS now has support for Apps2SD, allowing software to be shifted from the phone’s ROM to a memory card, not all apps support the system.

It remains to be seen how straightforward the Sensation’s bootloader is for third-party hackers to tinker with the OS. Sense is looking increasingly bloated – though still fast-moving on the Sensation’s 1.2GHz MSM 8260 processor – and stripping that out for a vanilla Gingerbread install would likely free up plenty more than 1GB of ROM.

Microsoft pushes out preview build of Internet Explorer 10 (update: Windows on ARM!)

Happy with your shiny new copy of Internet Explorer 9? It's already out of date -- Microsoft just announced Internet Explorer 10 at its MIX developer conference in Las Vegas, and if you're running Windows you can grab a spoon right now and sample an early taste. You can download the new Platform Preview right now at Microsoft's Test Drive site and see where the company's going with this early iteration, which adds support for additional web standards like CSS Gradients and CSS3 Flexible Box Layout. According to the press release, a gentleman named Dean Hachamovitch just revealed the new browser on the MIX stage, but we're actually watching him speak right now, and... he's not quite there yet. We'll let you know what he says.

Update: Video after the break!

Update 2: Dean and Steven Sinofsky (president of the Windows division) are indeed showing it off on stage, but they're just performing the same Test Drive tests you could run at home -- go on, you know you want to dip your toe in that HTML5 fishbowl.

Update 3: Oh, Dean, you're such a tease -- that copy of IE10 (and by association, Windows) was running on a 1GHz ARM chip! Yes, Windows on ARM -- photographic evidence after the break.

Update 4: NVIDIA just tweeted that the mysterious ARM chip is in fact a Tegra 2 processor.

T-Mobile 4G Mobile Hotspot Dropping Tomorrow

We reported back in March during the CTIA Wireless expo that T-Mobile will be doubling their 4G network speeds to 42Mbps in select cities. Along with that announcement was that they will also be launching several new 4G devices including the T-Mobile 4G Mobile Hotspot sometime in Spring. We now have confirmed that the hotspot will be available starting tomorrow.

T-Mobile confirmed the news via Twitter as well as their blog. The 4G Mobile Hotspot device built by ZTE will retail for $79.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate with a two-year data plan service agreement. The device is compact and lightweight and comes with an SD card slot for up to 32GB of expandable memory. However, the device only supports up to 21Mbps.

If you live in one of the select cities—currently Las Vegas, New York, and Orlando—you can take advantage of 42Mbps speeds by getting the T-Mobile Rocket 3.0, a laptop stick modem built by ZTE and the first 42 Mbps capable 4G product for the carrier. This device is set to launch late Spring, with date and pricing not yet confirmed.

Nvidia to stop supporting the Harmony platform past Froyo

Nvidia Harmony

The Nvidia corporation will drop Android support for its devices running on the Harmony platform, according to a post on its official developer forums by Andrew Edelsten, Tegra Developer Relations.  This means that devices using the Harmony platform at their core  -- the Viewsonic gTablet and ViewPad7, Advent Vega, Toshiba Folio 100, and Notion Ink Adam -- will not have drivers built for video acceleration for any current or future releases of Android.

This is not good news.  None of these Tegra 2-based devices is even a year old, and they are essentially dead in the water.  Even if someone were to build a higher version of Android for them, with no hardware support it's going to be a horrible experience.  Don't believe me?  Try an SDK port of Honeycomb on, well, on anything.

I got myself a third cup of coffee, and sat down all ready to bash Nvidia for abandoning support for very capable devices, then I realized something -- I can't.  These popular devices are just the first official victims of Google's new method of forcing companies to obtain its  blessing to use a free and open-source operating system.  It's not Nvidia's fault.  You can't be expected to spend money and resources to update drivers for tablets that will never have official support from Google.  Andrew says that they have already updated their Ventana based devices to Android 2.3, and are waiting for Google to release Honeycomb to them.  I'm afraid we're going to see the exact same thing with the original Galaxy Tab, and it won't be Samsung's fault this time.  The phrase "throwing the baby out with the bathwater" comes to mind. [Nvidia Developer ZoneThanks, Adam!

Mobee's Magic Bar brings inductive charging to your Apple bluetooth keyboard and Magic Trackpad

The wise folks who brought us the inductive Magic Charger for the Magic Mouse are now back with a new trick up their sleeves. This time we have the Mobee Magic Bar, which can energise either an Apple Wireless Keyboard or a Magic Trackpad thanks to their identical dual AA battery compartment. To get some wireless charging action, simply install the supplied battery cylinder to either device (presumably extra cylinders will also be available for purchasing), and then slide the protruding part into the charging dock. Of course, the nature of this setup limits the number of compatible devices (unlike the flat Magic Charger), but this is still more convenient than unscrewing the lid every time you run out of juice. If this Magic Bar tickles your fancy, you can pick one up around end of June for $59.90 -- pre-order starts on May 15th.

First Orbit offers a glimpse at Yuri Gagarin's spaceflight 50 years later (video)

It's been exactly 50 years to the day -- in some places, anyway -- that cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin's maiden voyage set off an international space race that defined an era, and while only Gagarin knew exactly what it was like to be the first man in space, documentarian Christopher Riley is giving us a glimpse of what the world might have looked like from the porthole of Vostok 1. As we reported before, First Orbit is a mashup of sorts that features original audio recordings from Gagarin's flight, coupled with footage taken by Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli from aboard the International Space Station. The result is nothing short of stunning, but you don't have to take our word for it -- in fact, go ahead and grab yourself some popcorn, hit the play button, and prepare to be amazed.

iPad 2 Display Gets Glasses-Free 3D Effect [Video]

Even if the specs for that front-facing camera on your iPad 2 isn’t all that impressive, it can still be useful for some nifty tech magic such as creating a glasses-free 3D experience on your iPad. Two researchers from have been able to use the front-facing camera for head-tracking to create a cool 3D effect. See the video demo after the cut.

French researchers Jeremie Francone and Laurence Nigay of Laboratory of Informatics at the EHCI Research Group, achieved the 3D effect by tracking a user’s head movements via the front camera in relation to the display, basically turning the camera into a Kinect-style sensor. And because it is a monocular 3D effect, you can actually witness it in all its glory via the 2D video below.

The effect achieved is not the true leaping off the screen type of 3D we’re accustomed to, but instead, creates a three-dimensional depth within the screen. It’s quite exciting to think about what possibilities this type of 3D effect can have for the iPad gaming experience should it ever be commercially implemented. Other possibilities can include 3D previewing of CAD renderings or even a 3D home screen as shown towards the end of the video.

Google I/O ticket listed on eBay reaches $3,000

Google I/O ticket listed on eBay reaches $3,000

This isn't the first time we've seen Google I/O tickets go up for sale on eBay -- previously they were being sold for what we thought at the time was an alarmingly high price. But, this one -- this one, takes the cake, and some most might say totally overcharges you for it. To their credit though, they are offering to send you any goodies they may get ahead of Google I/O, whatever that means. That makes up for it, kind of. OK, not really. Although the seller says they're unable to attend, this just seems like a total cash grab to us, and is just plain wrong. [Android Central Forums]

Going to Google I/O? Let us know in the forums,

Apple keeping iPhone 5 suppliers mum about launch date

In a research note, Analyst Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities suggests Apple is being extra secretive with its Asian suppliers when ordering parts for the iPhone 5 and is still quietly preparing the next generation handset for a June or July launch. White writes, "Although we do not have a smoking gun that definitively rules out a delayed autumn unveiling or one that supports a launch this summer, there is a pattern of activity in motion with the supply chain that makes us question a delayed launch."

Circulating rumors suggest Apple may release the iPhone 5 in the fall instead of the summer as it has done in the past. Analysts making this prediction have pointed to a lack of component orders for the iPhone which should have been made if the Cupertino company was targeting a June launch. Other rumors point to a significant overhaul of iOS which may include a cloud-based file locker and music streaming service that could debut this fall along with new iPhone and iPod touch hardware.

White also confirms other reports that suggest Apple is using its cash reserve to secure components for its iPad 2, iPhone and iPod touch. Apple is reportedly offering upfront cash payments to suppliers to keep its production line flowing while blocking out competitors that are not as cash-rich as Apple.

Apple reportedly hires top UK gaming PR execs from Nintendo and Activision

As you may have noticed, Apple has been more serious about gaming lately that it was even during its Pippin-fueled haze in the mid-1990s, and it's now offering yet more evidence of just how invested it is with a pair of new hires. While the company isn't confirming the move just yet, MCV is reporting that Apple has snatched up Nintendo UK's former head of communications, Rob Saunders, who just left the big N last week and will apparently be focusing on PR for iOS apps at Apple. What's more, he'll reportedly be joined at Apple by former Activision PR director Nick Grange, who's said to be focusing specifically on the iPad -- which, as we've seen, can be a pretty versatile gaming device in its own right.
